Saharanpur, June 22: A notorious criminal carrying a cumulative reward of ₹1.25 lakh was killed during a police operation in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district early Monday, officials said.
The deceased, identified as Lalan Singh alias Lallan, hailed from Anandgolwa village in Bihar’s Samastipur district and was facing charges in several serious crimes across Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
According to police, the encounter took place on the Sarsawa-Nakur road during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday when a police team intercepted the accused. During the ensuing exchange of fire, Singh sustained injuries and was rushed to the Community Health Centre in Sarsawa. He was later referred to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
A second suspect accompanying Singh managed to flee from the spot. Security personnel have launched a search operation to trace and apprehend the absconding associate.
Additional Director General (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash said Singh had long been on the radar of law enforcement agencies and was wanted in several high-profile criminal cases.
Investigators said he was accused in incidents including the shooting of a sub-inspector and the snatching of the officer’s service pistol in Varanasi in November 2022, besides a robbery-linked firing case reported from Chandauli during the same period.
Police records indicate that Singh and members of his gang were allegedly involved in a series of violent offences, including multiple murders, bank robberies, cash-van heists and the looting of government-issued weapons. Among the victims in the cases linked to the gang were police personnel, bank employees and security staff.
The reward on Singh’s arrest comprised ₹1 lakh announced by the Varanasi Police Commissionerate and an additional ₹25,000 declared by the Chandauli district police.
