Paris Saint-Germain secure sixth major title of 2025 after 1-1 draw and dramatic shootout victory

Al Rayyan, Dec 18: Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) claimed the 2025 FIFA Intercontinental Cup title by defeating Flamengo 2-1 in a thrilling penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in regulation time at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, Qatar.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave PSG the lead in the 38th minute, before Flamengo equalised through Jorginho’s penalty in the 62nd minute. Despite numerous opportunities for both sides in regulation and extra time, neither team could break the deadlock, sending the match to penalties.

PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov emerged as the hero of the shootout, making crucial saves, including a decisive stop against Luiz Araujo. Nuno Mendes sealed the win with the decisive penalty, giving PSG a 2-1 shootout victory and adding the Intercontinental Cup to their trophy cabinet for the year.

The win marks PSG’s sixth major title of 2025, complementing their domestic Ligue 1 title, Coupe de France, Trophee des Champions, UEFA Champions League, and UEFA Super Cup.

Following the victory, PSG coach Luis Enrique hailed the team’s consistency and resilience throughout the historic year, praising the blend of experienced and young players and the strong connection with supporters. “We have made history again! This year has been incredible and unforgettable,” Enrique said.
