Tremors Felt Across North India as Powerful Earthquake Hits Jammu and Kashmir's Doda
13-06-2023 : A powerful 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck the Doda region in Jammu and Kashmir, causing panic among residents and leading to some damage to buildings. The tremors were not limited to the immediate vicinity, as they were felt across parts of north India, including Delhi, and even in neighbouring Pakistan.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 1:33 pm with its epicentre located in Doda. It was recorded at a depth of 6 kilometres. As a result of the seismic activity, several buildings in Doda’s Bhaderwah town developed cracks, and the false ceiling of a ward in the sub-district hospital collapsed. Thankfully, the patients who were present in the ward at the time of the incident were swiftly relocated to the safety of the emergency ward for necessary medical attention.
Residents recounted their experiences during the earthquake, expressing their concern over the damage caused. Azim Malik, a resident of Ghata Bhaderwah, mentioned that his house suffered significant structural damage due to the strong tremors, resulting in cracks appearing throughout the building. In Bhaderwah valley, schoolchildren gathered in fields, visibly frightened by the event, while their teachers offered reassurance and support to those who were emotionally affected.
Authorities in Doda are currently assessing the extent of the damage caused by the earthquake. The effects of the tremors were also felt in Chamba, located approximately 150 kilometres away in Himachal Pradesh. Nandini, a resident of Shimla, shared her experience of feeling her kitchen shake due to the tremors. Although there have been reports of tremors in parts of Punjab and Haryana, no immediate casualties or significant property damage have been reported.
The earthquake serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the seismic activity and the importance of preparedness and safety measures in areas prone to such occurrences. Authorities will continue to monitor the situation and provide necessary assistance to affected individuals and communities.
