7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Russian Far East, Prompts Tsunami Warning

USGS reports quake east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky; Pacific Tsunami Warning Center cautions of hazardous waves along Russian coast.

Moscow, Sep 13: A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Kamchatka in Russia’s Far East on Saturday (September 13, 2025), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The quake occurred 111 kilometres (69 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative centre of the Kamchatka region, at a depth of 39.5 kilometres. Initially estimated at 7.5, the magnitude was later revised to 7.4.

Following the tremor, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert, warning of “hazardous” waves up to one metre (3.3 feet) along parts of the Russian coastline. It also said Japan, Hawaii, and other Pacific islands could experience minor waves of less than 30 centimetres.

The quake comes just months after Kamchatka was hit by one of the strongest recorded tremors in July, a magnitude 8.8 event that triggered four-metre-high tsunamis across the Pacific and mass evacuations in Japan, Hawaii, and other regions.

The July earthquake was the largest since the devastating 2011 Japan quake, which measured 9.1 and caused a tsunami that claimed over 15,000 lives.

Authorities are closely monitoring Saturday’s quake, with tsunami warnings and alerts active across vulnerable coastal areas.
