Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio Join Forces for “What Happens at Night” Adaptation
Hollywood legends Scorsese and DiCaprio reunite for chilling European-set drama with Jennifer Lawrence
LOS ANGELES, Sept 19 : Hollywood icon Martin Scorsese and superstar Leonardo DiCaprio are set to collaborate on a feature film adaptation of Peter Cameron’s acclaimed novel What Happens at Night. Apple Original Films is in talks to finance and produce the project alongside Studiocanal, which acquired the novel’s rights in 2023.
The adaptation will mark a reunion between DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, following their performance in Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up. Patrick Marber, Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Notes on a Scandal, is tasked with adapting the screenplay, while Scorsese will produce.
The story follows an American couple traveling to a mysterious, snow-covered European city to adopt a child. As they navigate a vast, nearly deserted hotel filled with enigmatic characters—a flamboyant chanteuse, a corrupt businessman, and a captivating faith healer—the couple’s sense of self and understanding of life begins to unravel in a suspenseful, eerie tale.
Scorsese and DiCaprio have a long history of critically acclaimed collaborations, including Gangs of New York, The Aviator, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and most recently, Killers of the Flower Moon, also backed by Apple Original Films. They are simultaneously developing The Devil in the White City, a true-crime adaptation.
DiCaprio is currently awaiting the release of One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, while Lawrence will next be seen in Die, My Love alongside Robert Pattinson, directed by Lynne Ramsay with Scorsese producing.
