Justice Stephen Gageler AC attends courtroom proceedings during official India visit, marking a moment of Indo-Australian judicial exchange.

NEW DELHI, Sept 19: Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, Justice Stephen Gageler AC, on Friday visited the Supreme Court of India, where he was accorded a warm welcome and shared the dais with Chief Justice of India B R Gavai.

Justice Gageler, currently in India to participate in the ongoing “Delhi Arbitration Weekend,” observed proceedings in the courtroom for over an hour alongside Justices Vinod Chandran and N V Anjaria, offering a rare moment of judicial exchange at the apex court.

Welcoming the Australian Chief Justice, CJI Gavai introduced him to lawyers and litigants, while also sharing light moments about his Delhi experience. “Yesterday he tasted the Delhi chaat also,” the CJI quipped, drawing smiles in the courtroom.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi recalled his visit to Australia during his tenure as Attorney General in 2015 as part of the Indo-Australian Legal Forum. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta praised Justice Gageler’s distinguished career at the bar and on the bench, expressing hope for longer future visits.

Justice Gageler, appointed to the High Court in 2012 and elevated as Chief Justice in November 2023, earlier served as Australia’s Solicitor-General. His presence at India’s top court reflects the growing cooperation and exchange between the judicial systems of the two democracies.
