Defence Minister Calls Iconic Fighter Jet a Symbol of India-Russia Ties and Bravery in IAF History
Chandigarh: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday paid a heartfelt tribute to the legendary MiG-21 fighter jets, calling them more than just aircraft but a testament to India-Russia ties and a cornerstone of Indian Air Force (IAF) valor. Singh spoke at the decommissioning ceremony held at the Chandigarh Air Force Station, marking the final operational sortie of the Russian-origin jets.
The MiG-21 has been a vital part of the IAF’s combat fleet for over six decades, serving in numerous key operations since the 1960s. Singh recalled the aircraft’s significant contributions in conflicts including the 1971 Indo-Pak war, the 1999 Kargil conflict, and the 2019 Balakot air strikes.
“We gathered here for the final operational sortie of the MiG-21. Being amongst you, I feel emotions of pride and gratitude,” Singh said. “Today, as we bid farewell to the MiG-21, we are closing a chapter that will be written in golden letters in military aviation history.”
Highlighting the jet’s global significance, he said over 11,500 MiG-21 aircraft were produced worldwide, with 850 serving in the IAF, reflecting its popularity, credibility, and multi-dimensional capability.
“MiG-21 is not only an aircraft or a machine but also a proof of deep ties between India and Russia,” Singh added. He emphasized that the aircraft has been a witness to countless acts of bravery and has added numerous proud moments to the history of military aviation.
The decommissioning marks the end of a 62-year-long journey for the MiG-21, which has been an enduring symbol of courage, technological excellence, and strategic partnership for India.
