Supreme Court Schedules Hearing on J&K Statehood Pleas Tomorrow

Petitions seeking restoration of J&K’s statehood scheduled for October 10 hearing before Chief Justice B.R. Gavai led bench.

Srinagar, Oct 9: The Supreme Court of India will hear petitions seeking the restoration of Jammu & Kashmir’s statehood on Friday, October 10. The pleas are listed at serial number 17 before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai.

Advocate Soayib Qureshi noted that the Union of India has not yet filed a response on the matter. During a previous hearing on August 14, the Court emphasized that the ground realities, including incidents like the Pahalgam attack, must be considered in the decision making process. “You must also take into account the ground realities; you cannot ignore what happened in Pahalgam,” the bench had remarked.

Petitioners argue that the continued delay in restoring statehood violates the federal structure enshrined in the Constitution. They also highlighted that no clear timeline has been laid out to implement the Supreme Court’s December 2023 directive, which stated that the restoration of J&K’s statehood should occur at the earliest.

The upcoming hearing is expected to revisit these concerns, with all eyes on the Court’s stance regarding the timeline and implementation of J&K’s statehood restoration.
