7 Dead in 20 Days as Suspected Viral Outbreak Hits Uttarakhand’s Almora
Uttarakhand health authorities scramble as mysterious deaths spark fear in Dhaula Devi block
Uttarakhand, Oct 16 : Seven people have died within the past 20 days in Uttarakhand’s Almora district amid a suspected viral outbreak in the Dhaula Devi block. Officials are investigating the sudden rise in infections, which they believe may be linked to contaminated water sources.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Naveen Chandra Tiwari confirmed that two deaths were due to heart attacks, while five others occurred under suspicious circumstances. Preliminary tests on 11 collected samples revealed typhoid infection in three cases, and water samples showed the presence of coliform bacteria. Dr. Tiwari emphasized, “We have directed the water supply department to clean all tanks and advised villagers to consume only boiled water.”
In response to the outbreak, the health department has deployed 16 teams consisting of ASHA workers, CHOs, and pharmacists across affected villages, including Bibadi, Phulai Jageshwar, Kheti, Bajela, Kabri, and Goli. Teams are conducting door-to-door health surveys and awareness campaigns to educate residents about safe water practices.
“Instructions have been issued to ensure proper cleaning of water tanks and promote hygiene,” added Dr. Tiwari. Officials are monitoring the situation closely, as this marks the first suspected viral outbreak in the Kumaon region. Investigations are ongoing to identify the exact virus responsible.
