Restrictions Imposed in Leh to Maintain Law and Order Amid Security Concerns

Leh, Oct 17: The District Magistrate of Leh, Romil Singh Donk, has imposed prohibitory restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, in view of inputs suggesting a potential threat to public peace and order in the district. The move aims to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure the maintenance of tranquillity across the region.

According to the official order, public rallies, processions, and gatherings of five or more persons have been prohibited within the jurisdiction of Tehsil Leh, unless prior permission is obtained from the competent authority. The directive further restricts the use of loudspeakers, public announcements, and any form of speech or statement that could incite unrest or disturb communal harmony.

Authorities said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to safeguard public safety and avert any escalation of tension in the wake of recent developments in the region. “The order has been issued in the interest of maintaining peace, harmony, and public order,” a district official stated, adding that the administration remains committed to ensuring the safety and rights of all citizens while preventing any activities that may disrupt normal life.

The restrictions will remain in effect until further notice, and any violation will invite strict punitive action under Section 223 of the BNSS, 2023. Law enforcement agencies have been directed to implement the order rigorously and take appropriate measures to prevent gatherings or acts that could lead to law and order disturbances.

Meanwhile, residents have been urged to cooperate with the administration and adhere to the guidelines issued, as the measures are intended purely to preserve peace and stability in the district. The administration assured that genuine and peaceful activities with prior authorization would continue to be permitted, ensuring that normal civic life remains unaffected.
