Nine killed, several injured in stampede at Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam
Tragedy struck on Ekadashi as overcrowding triggered panic among devotees, CM Chandrababu Naidu orders probe and directs officials to ensure immediate medical aid
Srikakulam, Nov 1 — A tragic stampede at the Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Kasibugga, Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district, claimed the lives of nine devotees and left several others injured on Saturday during Ekadashi celebrations. The incident occurred amid heavy rush and overcrowding as thousands of pilgrims gathered for the auspicious occasion.
Andhra Pradesh Governor S Abdul Nazeer confirmed the death toll and expressed deep anguish over the tragedy, extending condolences to the families of the victims. “I am profoundly grieved by the loss of precious lives in the stampede caused by the heavy rush of pilgrims,” the Governor said.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu also expressed sorrow and directed officials to provide immediate medical care to the injured. “The stampede incident at the Venkateswara Temple in Kasibugga has caused a shock. The death of devotees in this tragic incident is extremely heartbreaking. I have instructed officials to ensure speedy and proper treatment for the injured,” Naidu said in a post on X.
Rescue operations were launched immediately after the incident. Police and local authorities rushed to the site, while the injured were shifted to nearby hospitals. State Agriculture Minister K Atchannaidu visited the spot to oversee the relief efforts and gather details from temple authorities.
Minister and TDP leader Nara Lokesh also conveyed his condolences on social media, describing the incident as “deeply saddening.” “The stampede at Kasibugga Venkateswara Temple has caused several deaths, plunging us into profound shock. I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families,” he said, assuring that the government is ensuring the best possible medical care for the injured.
The state administration has ordered an inquiry into the circumstances leading to the stampede and measures to prevent such incidents during major temple events in the future.
