PM Modi Hails Women’s Cricket Team on World Cup Triumph, Urges Players to Champion Fit India Movement

Prime Minister hails India’s comeback triumph, praises key performances, and encourages players to inspire fitness among young girls across the nation.

New Delhi, Nov 6 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday hosted the Indian women’s cricket team at his residence on Lok Kalyan Marg to congratulate them for their historic victory in the 2025 Women’s World Cup.
PM Modi lauded the team for their remarkable comeback in the tournament after facing three consecutive defeats and online criticism, calling their triumph a reflection of resilience and determination.
During the interaction, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur recalled meeting the Prime Minister in 2017 when the team had reached the finals but couldn’t bring home the trophy. “This time, we’ve met you with the trophy  and we hope to keep meeting you like this,” she said with a smile.
The Prime Minister also reminisced about Harleen Deol’s stunning 2021 catch against England and Amanjot Kaur’s crucial catch in the 2025 final that dismissed South African captain Laura Wolvaardt, turning the game in India’s favour. Amanjot responded playfully, “That’s one fumble I’ll always cherish.”
PM Modi invited Kranti Gaud’s brother to meet him after learning he is an admirer, and encouraged the players to promote the Fit India movement, especially among young girls. He spoke about the rising challenge of obesity and the need to spread awareness about fitness. “Go to your schools and motivate young minds there,” he urged the team.
Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana said the Prime Minister’s words were deeply motivating and that his support continues to inspire the team. Deepti Sharma, named Player of the Tournament, said she had been looking forward to this meeting, recalling Modi’s 2017 advice to “keep working hard” to achieve their dreams  a message she said had come true with this victory.
