Typhoon Kalmaegi Claims 5 Lives as It Batters Central Vietnam
Hundreds of homes damaged as storm weakens into tropical depression over southern Laos
Hanoi, Nov 7 — Typhoon Kalmaegi has left at least five people dead and six others injured after sweeping through central Vietnam, local daily Lao Dong reported on Friday.
According to preliminary data, three fatalities were recorded in Dak Lak province and two in Gia Lai province. The storm also caused extensive property damage, with 52 houses collapsing and 2,593 others sustaining various levels of damage.
Local authorities are conducting damage assessments and coordinating recovery and relief efforts across the affected regions.
The Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Environment stated that Typhoon Kalmaegi weakened into a tropical depression early Friday morning before dissipating into a low-pressure area over southern Laos.
Officials have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious as post-storm flooding and landslides remain possible.
