Former Police Sub-Inspector Jailed for Forging Birth Date to Extend Service Tenure
Srinagar court sentences ex-officer to three years in prison for fraud and forgery after Crime Branch investigation
Srinagar, Nov 10 — The Economic Offences Wing of the Crime Branch Kashmir has secured the conviction of former Sub-Inspector Jagdesh Singh for forging his date of birth in official records to unlawfully extend his police service by two years.
A Srinagar court sentenced Singh to three years of simple imprisonment along with fines for fraud and forgery-related offences.
According to an official statement, the conviction pertains to FIR No. 32/2013 registered under Sections 420, 468, 471, and 201 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC). The case was initiated after the Jammu and Kashmir Police Headquarters reported that Singh had altered his year of birth from 1957 to 1959 to gain undue service benefits.
Investigations revealed that Singh fraudulently changed his date of birth to November 10, 1959, in his service documents, including his Character Roll and matriculation certificate, thereby extending his tenure by two years.
During the trial, the Economic Offences Wing presented multiple witnesses and strong documentary evidence, leading to Singh’s conviction under Sections 420, 511, and 468 RPC.
The Hon’ble Court of City Judge, Srinagar, sentenced Singh to three years of simple imprisonment and a fine of ₹5,000 under Section 420 read with 511 RPC, and another three years with a fine of ₹5,000 under Section 468 RPC. In case of non-payment of the fine, he will serve an additional six months of simple imprisonment. Both sentences will run concurrently.
The Economic Offences Wing reiterated its commitment to ensuring accountability, stating that “any act of fraud, forgery, or corruption, regardless of rank or position, will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.”
