Two Killed, 21 Missing After Landslides Strike Indonesia’s Central Java

Heavy rains trigger deadly slides in Cilacap; massive search and rescue operation underway

Indonesia, Nov 14 : Two people were confirmed dead, three injured, and 21 others remained missing after landslides struck Indonesia’s Central Java province on Thursday night, officials said on Friday morning.

According to Muhamad Chomsul, head of the Emergency Unit at the Central Java Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency, heavy rainfall triggered landslides in the Cibuyut and Tarukahan hamlets of Cibeunying Village in Cilacap Regency.

“The landslides hit residential areas and caused casualties. Two people were killed, three others suffered injuries, and 21 residents are still missing,” Chomsul told Xinhua over the phone.

A large-scale search and rescue operation is currently underway, involving personnel from the regional disaster management agency, the local search and rescue office, military units, government departments, and community volunteers. Heavy machinery has also been deployed to support the rescue efforts.

Authorities continue to monitor the area as unstable soil and ongoing rains pose additional risks.
