Maithili Thakur Becomes Bihar’s Youngest MLA, Wins Alinagar by 11,730 Votes

25 year old singer secures debut victory as NDA sweeps Bihar with a strong majority

Patna, Nov 15: Bihar’s youngest MLA now comes from Alinagar. Maithili Thakur, the 25-year-old folk singer, has secured her first electoral win with a margin of 11,730 votes, defeating Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) senior leader Binod Mishra. In her debut election, Maithili garnered 84,915 votes, a performance that surprised even local BJP cadres.

The Jan Suraaj candidate, once seen as a potential challenger, performed poorly—finishing behind an Independent—reflecting the sharp consolidation of votes in favour of major parties this time.

Speaking after her lead turned into a decisive victory, Maithili said the moment felt “like a dream”, stressing that she views the mandate as a responsibility rather than a celebration.

“People have a lot of expectations… This is my first term as MLA, and I will do my best for my constituency. I will serve my people as their daughter,” she told ANI.

Where the final numbers settled

The Election Commission released the full results on Friday night, confirming a sweeping victory for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The BJP and JD(U) alone secured 174 seats, showcasing a strong voter preference for the ruling coalition.

Final seat tally (EC):

Party Won Total
BJP 89 89
JD(U) 85 85
RJD 25 25
LJPRV 19 19
INC 6 6
AIMIM 5 5
HAMS 5 5
RSHTLKM 4 4
CPI(ML)(L) 2 2
IIP 1 1
CPI(M) 1 1
BSP 1 1
Total 243 243

NDA’s win: Why it mattered

The results show a decisive tilt towards the BJP–JD(U) alliance. A mix of women-centric welfare schemes, Nitish Kumar’s administrative reputation, and Chirag Paswan’s appeal among young voters contributed to the NDA’s momentum.

The Mahagathbandhan struggled with declining strongholds, an underwhelming campaign, and the lack of a compelling counter to the NDA’s “double-engine” development narrative.

Meanwhile, Jan Suraaj, expected by some to pull off a few upsets, failed to win a single seat.
