India, US Seal ‘Historic’ LPG Supply Agreement: Hardeep Puri

One-year agreement for 2.2 MTPA aims to boost energy security and shield consumers from global price shocks

India, Nov 17 : In a significant stride towards bolstering India’s energy security, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri announced on Monday that Indian public sector oil companies have, for the first time, signed a one year agreement to import liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the United States.

Calling the development a “historic first,” the minister shared the update through a social media post. “One of the largest and the world’s fastest growing LPG markets opens up to the United States,” he wrote, noting that India has been actively diversifying its LPG sourcing to ensure secure and affordable supplies for consumers.

Under the agreement, Indian PSU oil companies will import around 2.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of LPG from the US.

Puri emphasised the government’s continued commitment to protecting households especially women beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana from global price fluctuations. Despite a more than 60% surge in international LPG prices last year, Ujjwala consumers paid only ₹500–550 per cylinder, while the actual cost exceeded ₹1,100.

To shield the public from the impact of soaring international prices, the Government of India absorbed a subsidy burden of over ₹40,000 crore during the year.

The minister said the new India–US LPG deal further strengthens the government’s efforts to secure reliable, long-term, and affordable energy supplies for millions of Indian households.
