BJP Using Election Commission as Tool for ‘Vote Theft’, Alleges Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader questions EC reforms, alleges collusion to undermine democracy

New Delhi, Dec 10: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused the BJP of undermining India’s democratic process by turning the Election Commission into a “tool for vote chori”.

Sharing a video clip from his speech during the Lok Sabha debate on electoral reforms, Gandhi raised three questions that he said are troubling the public. These include the removal of the Chief Justice of India from the Election Commissioner selection panel, the grant of near-total legal immunity to the Election Commission ahead of the 2024 polls, and the decision to allow destruction of CCTV footage within 45 days.

“The answer to all three questions is one the BJP is turning the Election Commission into a tool for vote theft,” the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha said in a post on X.

Launching a sharp attack in Parliament on Tuesday, Gandhi alleged that the BJP and the Election Commission were “colluding to destroy” democracy and deprive citizens of their right to choose freely.

During the debate, he claimed the ruling party was “directing and using” the Election Commission to weaken democratic institutions.

Gandhi also put forward a series of reforms, including providing machine-readable voter lists to all political parties at least a month before elections, rolling back the provision that permits deletion of CCTV footage after 45 days, ensuring greater access to EVMs, and amending laws that grant immunity to election commissioners.
