NCERT 2025 Curriculum Shift: 5 Key Revisions in Textbooks You Need to Know

NCERT rolls out competency based, culturally relevant, and digitally integrated textbooks under NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023

India, Dec 22 : As India’s school education system evolves under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced major updates to its textbooks for the 2025–26 academic session. These revisions aim to make learning holistic, skill oriented, and aligned with contemporary educational needs.

1. Competency Based Textbooks for Key Grades

NCERT has redesigned textbooks for Grades 4, 5, 7, and 8, adopting a competency based approach that prioritises conceptual understanding, skills development, and real world application over rote learning. These books are available in both print and digital formats, with free e-versions accessible on the NCERT website
.

2. Redesigned Content Across Subjects

The updates cover Mathematics, Science, Languages, Social Sciences, Arts, and Vocational Education.

English, Hindi, Maths, and other language textbooks now feature contemporary examples and relevant contexts.

Social Science textbooks for Classes 7 and 8 adopt a multidisciplinary approach, integrating history, geography, economics, and civics.
These revisions aim to replace content-heavy books with a balanced, engaging curriculum that enhances understanding and retention.

3. Emphasis on Indian Context and Culture

History and social science textbooks now reflect India’s cultural heritage, local traditions, and indigenous knowledge systems.

Ancient Indian civilizations and regional histories have been expanded, while certain chapters on the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal period have been revised or omitted to align with the updated framework.
This ensures content is both regionally relevant and relatable for students across India.

4. Digital Features and Interactive Learning

New textbooks incorporate digital tools to enhance learning:

QR codes link to online resources, educational videos, government portals, and interactive quizzes.

Digital editions on the NCERT platform allow easy downloads for self-paced learning on mobile devices.
These features encourage students to go beyond the printed text and engage with multimedia resources.

5. Phased Rollout and Future Plans

While the new books for Grades 1–8 are being distributed for the 2025–26 session, NCERT plans to complete the rollout for Grades 9–12 by 2026–27. The Ministry of Education has also announced an expansion in textbook printing capacity to reduce costs and ensure timely nationwide supply.

Why These Changes Matter
The 2025 NCERT textbook updates represent a major shift in Indian school education:

They align with NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023 goals such as competency-based learning, critical thinking, and contextual understanding.

Textbooks are now more student friendly, culturally relevant, and digitally accessible.

Phased implementation signals a long-term transformation of India’s foundational education system.

Students, teachers, and parents are encouraged to refer to the latest official NCERT textbooks and digital PDFs to stay updated ahead of classroom instruction and exams.
