Cold Wave Eases Across Kashmir
Mercury rises in most parts of the valley dry weather expected over next few days
Srinagar, Dec 24: Cold conditions eased across Kashmir on Wednesday as minimum temperatures rose at most places and stayed above the freezing point, officials said.
The respite from the chill came after overcast night skies following recent snowfall and rains, which helped night temperatures climb across the valley. Officials noted that only the Pahalgam tourist resort in south Kashmir and the skiing hub of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded sub-zero temperatures.
In Srinagar, the minimum temperature on Tuesday night was recorded at 3.0 degrees Celsius, up from 2.7 degrees the previous night and 5.4 degrees above the season’s normal, according to officials. Other areas in the valley also recorded above-normal minimum temperatures, ranging from 1.8 to 5.6 degrees Celsius.
Tourist resorts continued to experience colder conditions, with Gulmarg at minus 4.2 degrees Celsius and Pahalgam at minus 2.2 degrees Celsius. In south Kashmir, Qazigund recorded 3.2 degrees and Kokernag 2.9 degrees Celsius, while Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded 2.0 degrees Celsius.
The Meteorological Department has forecast generally dry weather over the next few days, providing a brief relief from the harsh winter chill.
