Kate Hudson Opens Up on Passing on ‘Spider-Man’ and the Lessons It Brought

Hollywood star opens up about declining Mary Jane role, choosing The Four Feathers, and how the experience shaped her career.

Los Angeles, Dec 25: Hollywood actress Kate Hudson has revealed that she once turned down the role of Mary Jane Watson in the 2002 blockbuster Spider Man, a decision she says remains “uncomfortable” to discuss even after more than two decades. The role eventually went to Kirsten Dunst, and the film went on to become a major success, influencing the modern superhero genre.

Speaking on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Hudson, 46, confirmed the long-rumoured casting story and reflected on the emotional complexity of missed opportunities. “It doesn’t feel good to talk about it,” she said, adding that part of her does feel some regret.

At the time, Hudson chose to prioritize a different project The Four Feathers, a historical drama starring alongside the late Heath Ledger. The experience, she noted, was transformative, offering personal and professional growth, and forging a close friendship with Ledger.

Hudson described her feelings as a mix of gratitude and curiosity. “Life moves in its own direction,” she said, though she admits the idea of swinging through New York City as Mary Jane Watson is hard to ignore.

Looking ahead, Hudson’s career continues to flourish. She will soon star in Song Sung Blue alongside Hugh Jackman, who recently praised her acting skills at the Gotham Awards and hinted that her role could earn her Academy Award recognition.

For Hudson, turning down Spider-Man may have been a pivotal moment, but it led to experiences that profoundly shaped her journey in Hollywood.
