PV Sindhu Appointed Chair of BWF Athletes’ Commission for 2026–29

Indian Badminton Star Joins BWF Council, Ensuring Athlete Representation in Global Decision-Making

India, Dec 26 : Indian badminton ace and two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu has been elected Chair of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Athletes’ Commission for the 2026–2029 term, according to Olympics.com. With this role, Sindhu will also secure a seat on the BWF Council, giving athletes direct representation in the sport’s global governance.

Sindhu has been part of the BWF Athletes’ Commission since 2017 and has served as a BWF Integrity Ambassador since 2020. On her new appointment, she expressed gratitude: “To be entrusted with this responsibility by fellow athletes is an honour I carry with humility and gratitude. I would also like to sincerely acknowledge Greysia Polii for the exceptional work she has done in the previous term,” Sindhu said.

Greysia Polii, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic women’s doubles gold medallist, retired in 2022 and had served two terms on the Athletes’ Commission, most recently from 2021 to 2025.

Sindhu, India’s most successful badminton player, won silver at the Rio 2016 Olympics and bronze at Tokyo 2020. She is also slated to captain India at the 2026 Badminton Asia Team Championships in Qingdao, China.

Dutch player Debora Jille has been named Deputy Chair of the commission. Other members include reigning Olympic women’s singles champion An Se-young (South Korea), six-time African Games medallist Doha Hany (Egypt), and Paris 2024 women’s doubles gold medallist Jia Yifan (China).

In para-badminton, Chan Ho Yuen Daniel of Hong Kong China has been appointed full-time chair after serving in an interim role, while Indian para-badminton player Abu Hubaida is also part of the Athletes’ Commission.

Sindhu’s appointment reflects her continued leadership and influence in world badminton, further strengthening athlete voices in decision-making processes at the highest level.
