Crans-Montana Tragedy: Swiss Bar Fire Kills 40, Injures 115, Police Confirm

Swift emergency response saves lives as authorities work to identify victims; international leaders express condolences

India, Dec  02: At least 40 people were killed and around 115 others injured in a fire at the “Le Constellation” bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, authorities confirmed. The blaze, reported as non-arson, occurred in the early hours of Thursday, according to Valais Cantonal Police.

Valais Cantonal Police Commander Frederic Gisler said smoke was first spotted around 1:30 am, and emergency services were immediately alerted. First responders from the Crans Montana intercommunal police and gendarmerie arrived within two minutes, prioritizing evacuation and medical aid. Firefighters extinguished the blaze swiftly, and reception centres and a helpline were set up for victims and their families.

“All of the injured had received care shortly after 5 am, thanks to this widescale mobilisation,” Gisler said. Authorities warned that identifying the approximately 40 deceased could take several days, as families await confirmation.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed solidarity with Switzerland, tweeting his condolences to the bereaved families and support for the authorities managing the tragedy.
