South Korean Cinema Mourns: Legendary Actor Ahn Sung-ki Dies at 74, Leaves Six-Decade Legacy

Legendary six-decade career leaves an indelible mark on Korean cinema

South Korean , Jan 06 : Ahn Sung-ki, South Korea’s celebrated actor often hailed as the “nation’s actor” and one of the most respected screen performers, passed away at the age of 74. His agency, The Artist Company, confirmed that he died at Seoul’s Soonchunhyang University Hospital after a prolonged battle with blood cancer. “His acting has always been towards people and life, and through his countless works, he has conveyed deep resonance and comfort across ages and generations,” the agency said.

From child prodigy to cinematic legend
Born in Daegu, Ahn began acting at the age of six with his debut in the 1957 film Twilight Train. Over the next six decades, he starred in more than 100 films, including iconic titles such as Silmido, Radio Star, Mandala, and A Fine, Windy Day, which earned him the Best New Actor award at the Grand Bell Awards in 1980, Korea’s equivalent of the Oscars. His latest film, Birth, was released in 2022.

‘The nation’s actor’ with humility
While widely known as “the nation’s actor,” Ahn modestly preferred to be recognized simply as an actor. Throughout his career, he won numerous awards and became a beloved figure in South Korea, shaping the modern contours of Korean cinema with his nuanced performances.

Tributes pour in
Tributes have poured in from across the country, including from President Lee Jae Myung, who wrote on Facebook, “Ahn has left a big footprint on Korean film history and cultural arts. I already miss his warm smile and gentle voice.”

The Artist Company confirmed that Ahn’s funeral will be held on Friday at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital Funeral Hall. He is survived by his wife and two children.
