Trump Proposes $1.5 Trillion Military Budget for 2027 to Build ‘Dream Military’

US President seeks record defence spending amid global tensions, links funding to tariff revenue and pressures contractors on production

US, Jan 08 :  President Donald Trump on Wednesday proposed a massive increase in the United States military budget, calling for $1.5 trillion in defence spending for 2027, a significant rise from the $901 billion approved for 2026. Trump described the move as necessary in “troubled and dangerous times” and said it would help build what he called a **“Dream Military.”

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the decision followed extensive consultations with senators, lawmakers and senior officials and argued that rising revenues from tariffs on foreign goods make the larger budget feasible. He claimed the expanded funding would not only strengthen national security but also allow the country to reduce debt and deliver economic benefits to Americans.

The proposed 2027 figure represents a more than 50 % increase over current levels and would set a new record for US defence outlays if approved by Congress. However, the plan must still win congressional authorisation, and some lawmakers may push back.

Alongside the budget announcement, Trump issued sharp criticisms of major US defence contractors, accusing them of prioritising stock buybacks, dividends and high executive pay over investing in weapons production and critical equipment delivery. He threatened to restrict Pentagon contracts with firms that do not reinvest profits into expanding manufacturing capacity and improving output.

The proposal comes amid heightened geopolitical activity, including recent US military operations in Venezuela and discussions about strategic options involving territories such as Greenland and Colombia. Trump has framed the increased defence spending as a response to shifting global security challenges and a way to maintain American military superiority.
