While the Prime Minister calls for deeper faith in democracy, Congress chief flags issues related to electoral integrity and voter rights.

NEW DELHI, Jan 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday greeted citizens on National Voters’ Day and urged them to actively participate in democratic processes to strengthen the foundations of a developed India.

Observed annually on January 25 to mark the establishment of the Election Commission of India in 1950, National Voters’ Day seeks to recognise voters, promote youth participation and reinforce democratic values, including universal adult suffrage.

In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister said the occasion serves to reinforce trust in India’s democratic framework. He lauded the Election Commission of India and its officials for their role in ensuring robust electoral processes. Emphasising civic responsibility, Modi said voting empowers citizens to shape the nation’s future and contributes to the vision of a Viksit Bharat.

Meanwhile, Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, used the occasion to underline concerns over electoral practices. Describing the day as a reminder of the people’s role in determining the country’s destiny, Kharge stressed the need for free, fair and fearless elections.

He said transparent electoral rolls and a level playing field are essential to uphold democratic principles, alleging that issues such as “vote chori” and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise undermine public trust. Kharge also accused the ruling BJP and the Election Commission of functioning under pressure, asserting that safeguarding institutional independence is crucial for democracy to truly flourish.
