“J&K Assembly Budget Session Commences, LG Sinha Highlights Importance in Shaping Future Priorities”

Lieutenant Governor stresses reviewing achievements and charting priorities as CM Omar Abdullah to present FY27 budget.

Jammu, Feb 2: The Budget session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly commenced on Monday, with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha emphasizing its importance as a platform to review past achievements and plan the Union Territory’s future priorities.

The 27-day session, spread across three months with double sittings, began with the LG’s address, setting the tone for deliberations. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also holds the finance portfolio, is scheduled to present the Union Territory’s budget on February 6 for the financial year 2026-27, along with the Supplementary Statement of Expenditure for 2025-26.

“This session holds special significance as it allows us to reflect on our collective journey, evaluate achievements, and chart a clear roadmap for the future. It reaffirms our shared commitment to fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” LG Sinha said.

Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather called for the cooperation of all members to ensure smooth proceedings and effective utilisation of time. “All necessary arrangements have been made, and this session will include double sittings,” he added.

Legislators highlighted the session’s role in addressing public concerns. Congress’s Tariq Hameed Karra said it provides an opportunity to raise citizens’ issues, while BJP MLA Vikram Randwa emphasized seeking accountability from the government on budget implementation and poll promises.

This will be the second budget presented by the Omar Abdullah-led National Conference government since assuming office on October 16, 2024, ending nearly six years of central rule. The session will conclude on April 4, conducted in three phases: one before Ramzan and two after Eid-ul-Fitr in March and April. February will see 18 days of business, while March and April are scheduled for five and four days, respectively.

Opposition parties, including the BJP, PDP, and Congress, are expected to press the government on issues such as regularisation of daily wagers, demolition drives, and alleged discrimination, indicating the session could witness sharp debates and pointed questioning.
