FM Nirmala Sitharaman Says Maintaining 7–8% Growth Is Government’s Key Priority

Sustaining 7–8% Growth Remains Government’s Top Focus: FM Nirmala Sitharaman

New Delhi, Feb 2: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday emphasised that maintaining a 7–8 per cent economic growth is the government’s foremost priority, as it ensures job creation and equitable benefits for all citizens. Speaking to college students across India following the presentation of the Union Budget 2026-27, she said robust growth translates into greater workforce participation and higher productivity.

Growth, Jobs and Inclusive Development
“And that is why growth is the primary priority. To remain the world’s fastest growing major economy, we need to sustain 7–8 per cent growth. Every policy and initiative I undertake will aim at achieving this target,” the minister said.

Sitharaman highlighted the growing recognition of women in the workforce, particularly in semi-skilled roles, while noting the need for greater representation in leadership positions to influence decision-making and serve as role models.

Supporting Innovation and the Orange Economy
The minister also spoke about the government’s continuous support for the Orange Economy encompassing animation, visual effects, gaming, and comics which she described as a creative sector with significant employment and growth opportunities. “Television and media today rely heavily on these creative inputs. If you have the aptitude, this sector offers immense potential,” she said.

Budget Preparation Process
Sitharaman explained the meticulous process behind budget preparation, starting in late October or November, involving consultations with industry groups, trade unions, economists, and public inputs via social media. The proposals are reviewed, refined with ministries and states, and undergo multiple rounds of drafting before finalisation of the budget speech.
