Amaal Mallik Reveals Career Rollercoaster After ‘Sooraj Dooba Hai’
Composer reveals how chartbuster hit brought fame but left him with minimal earnings lost 45 film projects over five years
MUMBAI, Feb 3: Music composer and singer Amaal Mallik has spoken candidly about the highs and lows of his career following the 2015 hit ‘Sooraj Dooba Hai’ from the film Roy. The peppy track, which became a wedding and club anthem, defined Mallik’s early success but also exposed him to the harsh realities of the Hindi film music industry.
In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Amaal revealed that the song was produced on a budget of just Rs 8–9 lakh, yet reportedly earned Rs 60–70 crore for the music label. “I got nothing,” he admitted, noting that his publishing rights were negligible and far from the profits generated.
“I want to make that kind of money to help people,” Mallik said, emphasizing the importance of fair rights for creators. “That money can only come if I have rights or equal rights, jo film music mein nahi milta hai.”
The composer shared a personal anecdote, highlighting his sacrifices: “Sixteen years later, I just bought a car for myself. Never did anything for myself. It was always people around me.”
Speaking out, however, has come at a cost. Mallik revealed that his professional stance has hurt him in Bollywood, saying, “There was a time when I was working on a film in the morning, and by evening, we were fighting a court case.”
He also disclosed the staggering impact on his career: “In the last five years, I was dropped from 40 to 45 films,” underscoring the high price of honesty in the industry.
Mallik’s candid revelations shed light on the struggles of music creators in Bollywood and the need for fair compensation for their contributions to blockbuster hits.
