HAL Confirms Five Tejas Jets Ready for Indian Air Force Induction
Delivery of 83 Tejas Mk-1A aircraft underway, IAF induction to boost dwindling fighter squadrons
New Delhi, Feb 5: Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) announced on Thursday that five Tejas light combat aircraft are fully ready for delivery to the Indian Air Force, marking a significant step in the long pending procurement of 83 Tejas Mk-1A jets under a ₹48,000 crore deal signed in February 2021.
The delivery schedule has faced delays due to GE Aerospace missing multiple deadlines for supplying engines required for the jets. “HAL confirms that five aircraft are fully ready for delivery, incorporating all major contracted capabilities as per agreed specifications,” a company spokesperson said.
The official added that nine additional jets have already been built and flown, and will be delivered as soon as engines from GE are received. HAL is addressing all design and development issues in an expedited manner.
The single-engine, multi-role Tejas fighter is capable of high-threat air operations and is designed for air defence, maritime reconnaissance, and precision strike missions.
“The HAL has received five engines from GE so far, and the supply outlook is positive. Delivery plans are aligned with HAL’s current financial year targets,” the spokesperson said, emphasizing ongoing coordination with the IAF to ensure prompt induction.
The IAF is keen on accelerating deliveries as its fighter squadron strength has reduced to 30 from the sanctioned 42, highlighting the strategic importance of the Tejas Mk-1A in modernizing India’s air defence capabilities.
