Josh Hazlewood Ruled Out of T20 World Cup Australia Faces Fast Bowling Woes

US, Feb 06 : Australia’s World Cup Campaign Hit by Injury Setback
Australia’s pace attack has taken a hit ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as Josh Hazlewood has officially been ruled out of the tournament, which begins Saturday in Sri Lanka and India. Hazlewood, 35, failed to recover from a hamstring injury sustained during the final Sheffield Shield match, compounded by an Achilles issue during rehab.

Selectors Delay Replacement Decision
National selector Tony Dodemaide confirmed Hazlewood remains “some time away” from full fitness, ruling him out of the opening Group Stage match against Ireland in Colombo on February 11. Australia will not immediately name a replacement, opting to reassess squad requirements as the tournament progresses.

Hazlewood’s T20 Credentials
Despite limited recent T20 experience, Hazlewood boasts an impressive record, including key contributions to Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup victory in the UAE. He has taken 133 wickets at an average of 20.44 and economy rate of 7.57, ranking among the best international pacers in recent years.

Australia’s Bowling Depth Tested
The absence of Hazlewood joins fellow pacer Pat Cummins on the sidelines, leaving Xavier Bartlett and Ben Dwarshuis as the only fully fit frontline quicks. Sean Abbott, traveling reserve, could fill the gap, while Nathan Ellis and Tim David are expected to return from hamstring issues. Adam Zampa is fit for the opener despite minor groin tightness.

Skipper Confident in Squad Balance
Captain Mitchell Marsh remains confident despite the setbacks, highlighting the depth of all-rounders Marcus Stoinis and Cameron Green. “We’ve built depth within the squad and have confidence in the guys to do the job when required,” Marsh said, adding that conditions will guide final team selections.

Preparation Window Remains
Australia’s warm-up against the Netherlands was abandoned, but six days remain before the first group game, giving the team time to finalize strategies and integrate returning players into the squad.
