Donald Trump Reaffirms Iran Emergency, Imposes Tariffs on Nations Doing Business With Tehran

er Seeks to Target Foreign Trade With Iran to Protect US Security and Economic Interests

Washington, Feb. 7: US President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order reaffirming the national emergency with respect to Iran and establishing a framework to impose tariffs on countries that trade with Tehran. The White House said the move is aimed at safeguarding American national security, foreign policy goals, and economic stability.

Under the order, the United States can levy additional tariffs—potentially around 25%—on imports from any nation that “directly or indirectly” purchases goods or services originating in Iran. The administration said the measure would deter foreign economic engagement with Tehran and strengthen pressure on the Iranian regime.

The executive action is part of a broader effort to confront what the White House describes as Iran’s destabilising activities abroad, including its pursuit of nuclear capabilities, ballistic missile development, support for proxy groups, and actions seen as threats to regional peace and US interests. The White House fact sheet also cited allegations of human rights abuses and repression within Iran.

Officials said the tariff system could be adjusted based on changing circumstances, such as retaliation by affected countries or actions by Tehran to address the national security concerns outlined in the order. Key US departments, including Commerce, State, and the Trade Representative’s office, have been tasked with implementing the new regime.

The announcement underscores the Trump administration’s continued hardline stance toward Iran and expands economic tools intended to pressure not only Tehran but also countries engaging in trade with it.
