Devyani Rana Pledges to Serve People, Highlights Public Concerns in Maiden Assembly Address

Devyani Rana Raises Civic Concerns in Maiden J&K Assembly Speech, Urges Action on Disaster Management and Public Services

Jammu, Feb 7: In her first address to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Nagrota MLA Devyani Rana paid homage to her late father and senior leader Devender Singh Rana, while voicing strong concerns over reduced allocations for disaster management and other critical civic issues affecting the Union Territory.

Speaking during the Budget session on the proposals presented by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Rana warned that cuts to disaster-related funds were “alarming,” particularly as the region faces increasing climate-linked risks such as floods, landslides, and extreme weather events.

Focus on Disaster Preparedness and Public Welfare
“There is a growing need for equitable relief, stronger preparedness, and resilient infrastructure. Reducing disaster allocations sends the wrong message when residents are vulnerable to natural calamities,” she remarked.

She also highlighted the challenges faced by sanitation workers, urging the government to ensure timely and fair payment for those maintaining public toilets and sanitation facilities.

Power Sector Concerns
Rana criticized the functioning of the Power Development Department (PDD), calling the state of electricity infrastructure “deeply disturbing” due to insufficient capital expenditure and weak system upgrades, which continue to impact daily life in urban and rural areas alike.

A Call to Serve the People
Emphasizing the accountability of elected representatives, Rana reminded the House, “We have been chosen by the people to serve them. Their problems must be addressed with sincerity and urgency.”

Her speech combined a tribute to her political legacy with a firm stance on governance, disaster preparedness, and public welfare, setting the tone for her tenure as Nagrota MLA.
