Trump Congratulates Japan PM Takaichi on ‘Historic Landslide Victory’
US President praises leadership, highlights trade and security ties as Japan’s ruling coalition secures a two-thirds majority.
US, Feb 09 : President Donald Trump on Sunday congratulated Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi after her ruling coalition secured a decisive mandate in Japan’s general election, describing the result as both historic and politically significant.
In a message posted on Truth Social, Trump applauded Takaichi as a widely respected leader and said her decision to call early polls had delivered a sweeping win. He underscored that the coalition’s two-thirds strength in the lower house marked an unprecedented milestone in postwar Japanese politics.
Trump also expressed appreciation for Japanese voters, noting their strong participation and reaffirming his support for the country. He voiced confidence in Takaichi’s conservative “peace through strength” agenda and said he looked forward to hosting her at the White House next month following his recent visit to Tokyo.
According to Kyodo News, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), led by Takaichi, crossed the 310-seat threshold in the 465-member House of Representatives. The margin enables the government to advance constitutional changes and push legislation even if it faces resistance in the upper chamber, where the coalition lacks a majority.
The outcome represents a substantial rise from the party’s pre-election tally and is widely credited to Takaichi’s popularity since assuming office in October. Together with coalition partner Japan Innovation Party, the LDP is expected to maintain firm control over the legislative agenda.
Trump highlighted ongoing cooperation between Washington and Tokyo, pointing to progress on a major trade arrangement designed to benefit both economies. He has frequently commended Japan’s investment commitments in the United States and reiterated the importance of close coordination on national security.
Takaichi’s upcoming Washington visit will come ahead of Trump’s planned trip to China, amid growing regional tensions, including concerns surrounding the Taiwan Strait. US officials have described the bilateral alliance as a central pillar of stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, signalling continuity in strategic engagement between the two nations.
