Modern Makeover on Cards for Qazigund, Kashmir’s Gateway

Infrastructure upgrades, sanitation projects, and beautification works planned to transform Kashmir’s southern gateway into a sustainable transit hub.

Jammu, Feb 13: The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced a comprehensive plan to transform Qazigund often called the gateway to the Kashmir Valley through modern infrastructure and sustainable urban initiatives.

Replying to a query by MLA Abdul Majeed Bhat in the Assembly, officials highlighted the town’s strategic importance as a key road and rail transit point at the southern entrance to the valley, making it a priority for structured expansion.

The blueprint outlines a wide range of civic improvements, including road widening and strengthening, upgraded drainage networks, better footpaths, and enhanced water supply. Authorities are also working on advanced sewerage systems, sanitation facilities, and solid waste management to support long-term urban growth.

In addition to core infrastructure, the plan emphasizes improved public amenities, landscaping, and beautification to elevate the town’s visual appeal for residents, commuters, and tourists alike.

Projects are being executed in phases under multiple Central and Union Territory schemes, aligned with technical feasibility and funding availability. Urban Local Bodies and concerned departments have been tasked with implementing the initiatives within a structured planning framework.

The phased approach aims to ensure balanced development, environmental sustainability, and a higher quality of life while reinforcing Qazigund’s role as a crucial entry point to Kashmir.
