Tarique Rahman to Be Sworn In as Bangladesh Prime Minister Today

BNP secures sweeping mandate; India to be represented at high-profile Dhaka event

Bangladesh, Feb 17 : Bangladesh is set for a major political transition as the Tarique Rahman oath ceremony takes place on Tuesday at the Jatiya Sangsad in Dhaka. The chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party will assume office as Prime Minister following his party’s decisive victory in the parliamentary elections.

Tarique Rahman led the BNP to a commanding win, securing 209 out of 299 contested seats in the 300-member House. Polling in one constituency was deferred due to the death of a candidate. Newly elected Members of Parliament are also expected to take oath during the ceremony, marking the beginning of a new legislative term.

The political shift follows the dramatic exit of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024 after widespread student led protests. She subsequently left the country, and an interim administration headed by Chief Adviser Mohammad Yunus oversaw the transition.

Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, returned to Bangladesh after 17 years in exile in the United Kingdom to steer his party’s campaign.

India to Attend Swearing In

India will be represented at the ceremony by Om Birla, Speaker of the Lok Sabha, accompanied by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

An official statement from the Ministry of External Affairs said the participation reflects the enduring partnership and democratic ties shared by the two neighbouring nations.

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited, he is unable to attend due to prior commitments.

The parliamentary oath taking is scheduled for 9:30 am at Parliament Bhawan, followed by the swearing in of the new Council of Ministers later in the day.
