Trump Imposes 10% Global Tariff Following US Supreme Court Setback, India Among Affected Nations

Revised levy replaces IEEPA-based tariffs as US targets imports from India and other nations

US, Feb 21 : India will face a 10 per cent tariff under a new global levy announced by US President Donald Trump following a setback in the US Supreme Court. The court ruled 6-3 that the Trump administration exceeded its authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) of 1977 to impose broad import duties. The decision clarified that IEEPA does not grant the President the power to levy tariffs, which rests with Congress.

In response, the US administration invoked an alternative statute to impose the revised tariff. A White House official confirmed to Agency that India would be subject to the 10 per cent levy, which will remain in effect until another legal authority is invoked. This move effectively replaces the previous IEEPA based tariffs and extends US duties to Indian imports along with other global suppliers.

The revised tariffs underscore ongoing trade tensions and mark a significant shift in US trade policy, impacting bilateral trade relations between India and the United States.
