US and Israel Clash With Iran at Emergency UN Security Council Session

UN chief warns of uncontrollable escalation as emergency session follows fresh Middle East strikes

India, March 2: The United Nations Security Council witnessed sharp exchanges between the United States, Israel and Iran during an emergency meeting convened hours after coordinated military strikes intensified tensions across West Asia.

Addressing the 15-member council, Antonio Guterres cautioned that continued military operations risk triggering an uncontrollable chain of events in an already volatile region. He described the situation as a grave threat to international peace and security and urged restraint from all sides.

Guterres condemned both the large-scale strikes carried out by Washington and Tel Aviv as well as retaliatory actions by Tehran. He said the developments amounted to violations of sovereignty and territorial integrity affecting multiple Gulf nations, including Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Referring to reports from Tehran, the UN chief noted explosions in areas housing key government facilities and senior leadership compounds. He added that there were unverified claims that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, had been killed.

While the council was in session at UN headquarters in New York, US President Donald Trump, speaking from his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, publicly announced Khamenei’s death in a social media post. Trump defended the ongoing military campaign and indicated that operations would continue as part of what he described as efforts to secure lasting stability in the Middle East.

The emergency debate underscored deep divisions within the Security Council as diplomatic tensions mount alongside expanding military confrontations in the region.
