BJP Govt Undermining India’s Strategic Autonomy, Says MK Stalin
Tamil Nadu CM questions need for foreign approval on energy imports, urges stronger defence of national sovereignty
Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin on Friday criticised the BJP-led Union government, alleging that its policies are weakening India’s long standing principle of independent decision making in foreign affairs.
The remarks came amid developments involving a temporary waiver issued by the United States allowing Indian refiners to continue purchasing Russian oil for 30 days as geopolitical tensions escalate in West Asia.
Questioning the situation, Stalin said India should not require the approval of another nation to secure its own energy supplies. In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he asked why the country must depend on external permissions for decisions tied to its energy security.
The chief minister also referred to the sinking of the Iranian warship IRIS Dena near the coast of Sri Lanka by the United States shortly after it participated in the International Fleet Review 2026 naval exercise hosted by India in Visakhapatnam.
Stalin said the incident raised concerns, noting that when a vessel that had taken part in a multinational event organised by India meets such a fate, the country should not appear silent or passive on the global stage.
Emphasising the importance of safeguarding national interests, he stated that India’s dignity, sovereignty and strategic independence must be firmly protected in international affairs.
