JK Dy CM Expresses Hope for Fair Justice in Mehraj Malik Case, Cites Wangchuk Precedent

Surinder Chaudhary cites Sonam Wangchuk case, calls for fairness in detained MLA’s matter

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary on Wednesday voiced confidence that the judiciary will ensure a fair outcome in the case of detained legislator Mehraj Malik.

Malik, who heads the Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Aam Aadmi Party, was booked under the Public Safety Act in September 2025 over allegations linked to public order and is currently lodged in Kathua jail.

Referring to activist Sonam Wangchuk, Chaudhary said he expects a similar judicial approach marked by fairness and accountability. He reiterated that his party had opposed Wangchuk’s detention from the outset and welcomed the role of the courts in safeguarding rights.

Speaking to reporters in Kulgam, the deputy chief minister also stressed the need for global peace, warning that escalating conflicts across regions could have long-term consequences. He said international leaders must prioritise dialogue and resolution, recalling calls for peace by leaders such as Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Farooq Abdullah.

He emphasised that sustained efforts to reduce tensions are essential to ensure stability and security for future generations.
