EC’s Bengal Transfers Won’t Impact Poll Outcome, Says Omar Abdullah

J&K Chief Minister says administrative reshuffle won’t influence voter mandate in upcoming Assembly polls

Srinagar, Mar 20 — Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday criticised the Election Commission’s large scale administrative reshuffle in West Bengal, asserting that such moves will not alter the outcome of the upcoming Assembly elections.

In a post on social media, Abdullah dismissed the impact of the transfers, expressing confidence that the electorate will once again back the Trinamool Congress with a decisive mandate. He emphasised that electoral outcomes are shaped by political leadership and public support rather than bureaucratic changes.

The remarks come after the Election Commission ordered significant changes in the state’s administrative setup following the announcement of the poll schedule. Several top officials, including the chief secretary, home secretary, director general of police and Kolkata police commissioner, have been reassigned as part of the exercise.

Abdullah also questioned the pattern of such actions, suggesting that similar large-scale reshuffles are more commonly seen in states not governed by the BJP. Despite this, he maintained that voters in West Bengal will ultimately determine the result independent of administrative interventions.

The state is set to go to the polls in two phases later next month, with counting scheduled in early May. Political activity has intensified as parties gear up for a closely watched contest.
