Cuba Rejects US Embassy Request to Import Diesel

Havana turns down plea for generator fuel as diplomatic tensions rise over energy shortages

Washington — The Cuban government has refused a request by the U.S. Embassy in Havana to allow it to import diesel for its generators, two U.S. officials said Friday, as the fuel crisis on the island deepens under an ongoing U.S. fuel blockade.

The decision comes as the U.S. State Department is considering reducing staffing at its Havana mission due to diesel shortages, which could prompt a reciprocal move affecting Cuban diplomatic staff in Washington.

Cuba’s rejection underscores growing strain between the two countries, with Havana facing acute fuel shortages and widespread power outages linked to the blockade and dwindling oil imports from former allies.

The Cuban government has argued it must manage its limited resources amid a severe energy crunch, while the U.S. continues to maintain sanctions and restrictions that have choked off key petroleum supplies to the island.

As the crisis unfolds, diplomatic and energy tensions remain high, with both sides weighing their next steps in this complex standoff.
