Rising Screen Time Poses Growing Threat to Eye Health
Experts highlight digital strain risks and simple steps to protect vision in a screen-driven world
NEW DELHI: With increasing dependence on smartphones, laptops, and tablets, excessive screen time is emerging as a major concern for eye health, affecting people across all age groups.
Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to digital screens can lead to a condition known as Digital Eye Strain, characterized by symptoms such as dryness, headaches, blurred vision, and eye fatigue. Reduced blinking while using screens further aggravates the problem, causing discomfort and irritation.
Children and working professionals are particularly vulnerable, as online education, remote work, and entertainment continue to drive screen usage to unprecedented levels. Specialists note that blue light emitted from screens may also disrupt sleep patterns, adding to overall health concerns.
To minimise risks, experts recommend adopting simple preventive measures. The widely suggested 20-20-20 rule—taking a 20-second break every 20 minutes to look at something 20 feet away helps reduce strain. Maintaining proper screen distance, adjusting brightness, and ensuring adequate lighting are also essential steps.
In addition, regular eye check-ups, limiting unnecessary screen exposure, and incorporating a balanced diet rich in vitamins A and C can support long-term eye health.
As digital devices become an integral part of daily life, awareness and proactive care are key to preventing long-term damage and maintaining healthy vision.
