NEP Doesn’t Impose Any Language on States, Says MoS Education Jayant Chaudhary in Lok Sabha

MoS Education tells Lok Sabha states have full flexibility in implementing language policy

NEW DELHI: Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary on Monday clarified in the Lok Sabha that the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) does not mandate the imposition of any particular language on states, but instead encourages multilingual learning.

Responding to queries during Question Hour, Chaudhary emphasised that the policy provides flexibility to states in adopting language frameworks, including the three language formula, which he said aligns with existing practices and allows local adaptation.

He noted that the NEP explicitly supports early exposure to multiple languages to improve learning outcomes, while ensuring that at least two Indian languages are learned by students. The choice of the third language, he added, depends on regional preferences and demand.

Addressing concerns raised by Tamil Nadu, the minister said the Centre has continued to provide financial support under the Samagra Shiksha programme, with funds released subject to procedural compliance, including submission of utilisation certificates.

He also referred to the PM-SHRI initiative, aimed at developing model schools aligned with NEP principles, and noted that the state has yet to formalise its participation.

The clarification comes amid ongoing differences between the Centre and Tamil Nadu over the implementation of NEP provisions, particularly regarding language policy and associated education schemes.
