CM Stalin Backs Women’s Quota Proposal, Urges Centre for Equitable Delimitation
Stalin urges centre to ensure fair representation while backing women’s reservation in Parliament and state assemblies.
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin welcomed the Union government’s decision to introduce 33% reservation for women in state assemblies and the Lok Sabha, while emphasizing that the proposed delimitation exercise should preserve the current representation of states in Parliament.
On Tuesday, Stalin called on the centre to convene a special session of Parliament in June to discuss and pass the required constitutional amendments for implementing these reforms.
Addressing reports that the government may use the 2011 Census for delimitation to fast-track women’s reservation, he said this approach contradicts The Constitution (128th Amendment) Bill, 2023, which planned to implement the reservation after delimitation based on the 2026 Census.
“This appears to be aimed at gaining electoral advantage in the upcoming Assembly elections in four key states. Pushing such a major step while the Model Code of Conduct is in force is unprecedented,” Stalin wrote on X.
He added, “As the DMK President and a proponent of the Dravidian legacy of women’s empowerment for over a century, I fully support the initiative unconditionally, while firmly asserting our right to a fair delimitation process.”
