Opposition MPs Stage Protest in Parliament Complex Over LPG Supply Shortage

Leaders raise concerns over cooking gas shortages as government works to manage supply amid global tensions.

NEW DELHI: Several Opposition MPs staged a protest inside the Parliament House complex on Wednesday, raising concerns over a reported shortage of LPG supplies and its impact on households.

Senior leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule, SP’s Dharmendra Yadav, and representatives from multiple parties, gathered near Makar Dwar holding banners and shouting slogans against the government.

The protest highlighted growing worries about the availability of cooking gas, with MPs accusing the Centre of failing to ensure adequate supply during a period of rising demand.

The situation comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have affected energy markets. In response, the government has prioritised the allocation of domestically produced natural gas towards essential sectors such as LPG, compressed natural gas (CNG) and piped cooking gas.

Officials said efforts are underway to stabilise distribution by accelerating city gas projects and increasing allocations where required. Despite these measures, opposition leaders continue to press for immediate solutions, citing the hardships faced by consumers.

The issue has added to the political heat in Parliament, with calls for greater accountability and clarity on steps being taken to address the supply concerns.
