MeT Department issues advisory warning of snowfall, thunderstorms and possible landslides

Srinagar, Mar 28: The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has forecast a spell of unsettled weather across Jammu and Kashmir, with intermittent rain and snowfall expected over the next few days, officials said on Saturday.

Director of the MeT Centre, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, said that from March 28 to 30, the region is likely to witness generally cloudy conditions with light to moderate rainfall in the plains and snowfall over higher reaches at most places, especially during evening and night hours.

He added that thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds with speeds reaching 40–50 kmph are likely during this period, increasing the risk of disruptions in several areas.

According to the forecast, March 31 will see cloudy skies with brief spells of light rain or snow at scattered locations. From April 1 to 2, conditions are expected to remain partly to generally cloudy, with isolated light rainfall. Further, between April 3 and 4, scattered areas may receive light rain or snowfall, while April 5 to 7 is likely to witness partly cloudy weather with isolated precipitation.

The MeT Department has also issued an advisory warning of moderate snowfall in higher reaches of North and Central Kashmir, along with the possibility of landslides at vulnerable spots during the active weather phase.

Farmers have been advised to suspend agricultural activities on March 29 and 30, while travellers have been urged to follow official traffic advisories and plan their journeys cautiously.
