Opposition MPs Protest in Parliament Over Controversial FCRA Amendment Bill
Congress and allied parties demand withdrawal of the proposed legislation, citing concerns over targeting NGOs
NEW DELHI, Apr 1: Several Opposition MPs, led by the Congress, staged a protest at the Parliament House complex on Wednesday against the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, demanding that the government withdraw the proposed legislation.
The MPs displayed a large banner reading “Stop Targeting NGOs and Institutions” and raised slogans condemning the government’s move. Key participants included Congress leaders, SP’s Dimple Yadav and Ram Gopal Yadav, IUML’s ET Mohammad Basheer, NCP(SP)’s Supriya Sule, and RSP’s NK Premchandran.
The Congress had earlier accused the BJP of attempting to “bulldoze” the FCRA amendments through Parliament, calling the bill “blatantly unconstitutional” and “draconian”. Congress general secretary K C Venugopal stated that MPs were urgently instructed to reach Delhi to attend Parliament and oppose the legislation.
The FCRA amendment bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha on March 25, seeks to curb misuse of foreign funding, especially by individuals engaging in forced religious conversions. Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said the legislation is intended to enhance transparency and ensure proper use of foreign contributions.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju clarified that the amendments aim to safeguard national security and interests, emphasizing that no religious organisation is being targeted. Speaking to reporters at BJP headquarters, Rijiju dismissed Opposition claims as “completely false, fabricated and misleading.”
