Top court reviews CCTV implementation; Centre promises swift resolution through coordinated action
New Delhi, Apr 7: The Central government on Tuesday informed the Supreme Court that concerns related to the installation and functioning of CCTV cameras in police stations nationwide will be addressed within a two-week timeframe.
Appearing before a bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, Attorney General R Venkataramani stated that the government is actively reviewing the situation and significant progress is underway. He assured the court that consistent engagement with key stakeholders would help resolve pending issues promptly.
The Union Home Secretary was also present in compliance with the court’s April 6 directive, which sought his assistance in ensuring effective implementation of the CCTV installation framework. His presence aimed to facilitate better coordination and provide clarity on the steps being taken.
The Attorney General emphasized that regular consultations with the amicus curiae and concerned officials would be held to ensure timely resolution.
The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on April 28. The Supreme Court is examining the issue through a suo motu case focusing on the lack of properly functioning surveillance systems in police stations.
