Cardinals Seal 3-2 Victory Behind Dustin May’s Stellar Performance
Strong pitching and timely hitting help St. Louis secure a narrow victory in series opener
ST. LOUIS — Dustin May delivered an impressive outing, pitching six effective innings to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.
Ramón Urías played a crucial role in the victory, scoring twice after collecting a key double. The Cardinals built momentum early when Victor Scott II drove in Urías with a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
The decisive moment came in the fifth inning. Jordan Walker singled before Urías earned a walk. Thomas Saggese followed with an RBI single, and after both runners advanced on a wild pitch by Zach Kelly, José Fermín added a sacrifice fly to give St. Louis a 3-2 edge.
Boston responded in the fourth inning when Masataka Yoshida produced an RBI groundout. In a rare play, Trevor Story stole home during a double steal attempt alongside Marcelo Mayer, leveling the score.
May (1-2) conceded two runs only one earned on four hits while striking out four batters. In relief, Riley O’Brien closed the game with a perfect ninth inning to earn his fourth save.
Kelly (0-1), who came in for Connelly Early in the fifth, allowed two runs in limited action and took the loss.
The Cardinals also faced an injury concern as shortstop Masyn Winn exited the game due to a lower-leg contusion after being hit by a pitch.
Looking ahead, Boston is expected to start Ranger Suárez against St. Louis’ Kyle Leahy in the second game of the series.
